Regular lubrication and inspection of stainless-steel hinges and door fittings

Cabinet doors, refrigerator lids and service panels in professional kitchens rely on stainless-steel hinges, pivot points and latches. Despite their corrosion resistance, these fittings require regular lubrication and inspection to prevent squeaking, stiffness and premature wear — especially in high-humidity, high-temperature environments. Neglecting these small components can lead to sagging doors, misalignment or damaged frames, disrupting kitchen operations and causing costly repairs.

First remove surface grease with a mild cleaner and warm water — this allows the lubricant to adhere directly to the metal surface. Use a food-grade, silicone-based spray lubricant (NSF-H1 certified) to prevent dripping and reduce dust buildup. Apply a fine mist to the hinge joints, door springs and latch mechanisms. Open and close each door 10–15 times to let the lubricant penetrate the internal surfaces; wipe off any excess to prevent dirt accumulation.

Then perform a visual inspection under good lighting. Look for signs of metal fatigue: fine cracks around weld seams, corrosion spots on hinge sleeves and worn screw heads. Tighten any loose mounting screws to the torque specified by the manufacturer (typically 1.5–2.0 Nm for M4–M6 screws). Check heavily used door hinges for vertical play — if present, replace the pin or the entire hinge to maintain door alignment and prevent friction.

Do not neglect the pivot points on flaps or drop-down doors: these often use bronze or PTFE bushings around a stainless-steel axle. When moving the flap, listen for scraping noises or uneven motion. A drop of H1 silicone oil in the bushing can restore smooth operation without damaging the protective coating.
